A substantial sea defence wall, which forms the promenade, is a distinctive characteristic of this gently sloping sand and shingle beach at the mouth of the Thames and Medway estuaries. Gardens and a leisure complex separate the town centre from the beach

From Sheerness it is possible to walk right around the Isle of Sheppey. or the coastal trails. The Medway Estuary and Swale marshes are rich in wildlife. Naturalists should visit the Swale National Nature Reserve at the eastern tip of Sheppey or the RSPB'

From the M20. follow the signs for the A249 to Sheerness. Steps lead to the beach and lifeguards will assist the disabled.
